Romanian city to add sensors for parking places, public transport

25 May 2017

A city in Central Romania continues to implement measures aimed at turning it into a smart city.

Local authorities in Cluj-Napoca plan to install sensors in the road, in the parking places located in the city center, that would show if the parking place is free or whether another car is parked there. Drivers would be able to see this information via an app available for computers or mobile phones.

“We have over 3,600 such parking places in zones I and II. We will also install such sensors in the public transport stations. They will indicate whether there is a means of transport or another vehicle in the station,” Cluj-Napoca mayor Emil Boc announced in a Facebook post.

In early-April this year, Cluj-Napoca became the first city in Romania that issues urbanism certificates online. The city's residents can also use an app to notify the authorities about various problems in the city, or they can pay for the parking via text message (SMS).

The Cluj-Napoca City Hall also allows online payment for local taxes, and filling in several requests online, such as those for parking lots. Marriages can also be scheduled online in the city.
