Chinese group submits offer for Transylvania Highway segment

08 March 2017

Romania’s Highways Company has received 12 offers from companies and consortia interested in building the Targu Mures-Ungheni highway segment, which is part of the Transylvania highway.

The contract’s value is estimated at some EUR 63 million. The major Romanian construction firms are missing from the list of bidders as many of them have been affected by corruption charges or insolvencies.

One of the bidders is Sinohydro, a state-owned Chinese company with a turnover of USD 20 billion, reports local Digi24. The company makes some USD 6 billion in revenues from contracts outside China.

The Chinese group has submitted an offer in association with Romanian firm Hidroconstructia, one of the few Romanian names present on the bidders’ list. It is the only large local construction firm taking part in this tender. Romanian companies such as Euroconstruct Trading 98, Straco, Tehnologica Radion, which were constantly involved in the construction of highway sectors, are now missing.

Companies from Italy, Spain, Austria, Turkey, and Bulgaria are also in the race for this contract.
