Car registrations reach new record in Romania in first four months
Car registrations in Romania grew by 75% in the first four months of this year compared to the same period in 2016 reaching almost 196,200 units, according to the Directorate for Driver Licenses and Vehicle Registrations – DRPCIV.
Car sales were strongly supported by the second-hand cars brought from abroad, after the environment tax for the registration of old cars was removed in February.
The new car registrations went up by 22.3% between January and April compared to the same period last year reaching over 28,900 units. Meanwhile, used car registrations exceeded 167,200 units, up 88.6% year-on-year.
Overall, 85% of the cars registered in the first four months were used cars. For every new car registered in Romania, other six old cars were registered during this period.
In April, new car registrations reached 6,640, up 7.5% over April 2016. The registrations of used cars amounted to over 39,100 units, up 63.2% over April last year.
New car registrations may accelerate in the next months as the Cash-for-Bangers program starts on May 18.
