The Buena Vista Social Club story is truly inspiring. Starting back in 1996 as a small project to create something of a testament to Cuban music, the recording sessions brought together what turned out to be a remarkable collection of musicians. Some of the band had not performed in many years, but the talents of veteran musicians such as pianist Ruben Gonzalez, singers Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo, guitarist and singer Eliades Ochoa and of course Compay Segundo, 89 years old at the time, caught the world’s attention, winning legions of fans from across the globe. US musician Ry Cooder, who helped produce the album, as well as playing on it said at the time “It’s the peak, a music that takes care of you and nurtures you. I felt that I had trained all my life for this experience and it’s a blessed thing,” quoted by the official Buena Vista Social Club site. Later, the Wim Wenders film brought Buena Vista Social Club to an even greater audience.
