Bucharest Stock Exchange wants MSCI emerging market status

24 October 2014

The Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) aims to receive the emerging market status by 2017, from the current frontier market status, said Ludwik Sobolewski, general manager of the BVB, quoted by Bloomberg.

Morgan Stanley Capital International certifies capital markets, depending on a host of factors, including liquidity and the number of shares on sale. Ticking these boxes is a ‘challenge’, said Sobolewski, but local authorities are trying to make it easier for investors to enter the local capital market. Romania thus wants to become one of the markets checked by MSCI in 2015.

If it fails to do so, the next window of opportunity is in mid-2016. Becoming an emerging in market would help the BVB increase trading volumes, and catch up with other regional stock markets.
