Bucharest court forbids investigated former mayor to run for same office

29 April 2016

The Bucharest Court rejected yesterday Cristian Popescu Piedone’s candidature to become mayor of Bucharest’s Distict 4, and the decision is final.

Piedone, former mayor of the same district, thus can't take part in the local elections that will take place in June. His candidature was rejected three times, but he kept challenging the decision.

The former mayor has been under investigation after 64 people died in a fire at the Colectiv club in Bucharest last year. The club did not have all the necessary permits, and the District 4 City Hall should have closed it.

Piedone resigned in November 2015 amidst protests stirred by the tragedy. He then said he would withdraw from politics.
