Beauty and the Beast tops Romanian box office after opening

22 March 2017

American musical romantic fantasy film Beauty and the Beast debuted first place in the Romanian box office last weekend, with revenues of RON 2.19 million (some EUR 480,000), reports local News.ro.

The movie, directed by Bill Condon, premiered in Romanian cinemas on Friday, March 17.

The local media reported last week that Romania’s Coalition for Family, an NGO that has been fighting against gay marriages, has suggested that the new Disney movie should be banned from Romanian cinemas due to the “gay moment” in it. However, the NGO later denied the information.

American monster film Kong: Skull Island debuted second in the Romanian box office, with revenues of almost RON 845,000 (EUR 185,000) and over 37,400 viewers. Meanwhile, superhero film Logan went down to third with revenues of about RON 423,000 (EUR 92,000) and almost 21,000 viewers.

The top five continued with Sleepless – with revenues of RON 376,225 (EUR 82,500), and Ballerina - with RON 294,905 (EUR 65,000). Martin Scorsese’s latest film Silence debuted on this sixth place in the Romanian box office, registering revenues of some RON 233,000 (EUR 51,000).
