Bank deposits stagnate in Romania due to low yields

The yields for bank deposits in Romanian currency went below 1%, which made people and companies less eager to place their money in local banks.

At the end of September, the bank’s deposits in lei and foreign currency amounted to some EUR 57.5 billion, the same level as in the previous month.

However, deposits rose by 11% in volume compared to the end of September 2015. Most of the deposits, namely 70%, belong to individuals.

Households had deposits of EUR 34.2 billion at the end of September, a level similar to the one recorded last month. Their deposits in lei rose by 10.5% year-on-year reaching EUR 21.6 billion whereas the ones in euro went up by 7.3% to EUR 12.7 billion.
