Another poor quality new highway in Romania

25 April 2016

The work on the second segment of the Lugoj-Deva highway are not compliant with the project as mediocre-quality material has been used for the embankments, according to the firm hired to assess the work.

The problems can be fixed without demolishing the road that has already been built, by further consolidating the sides of the road, according to the same firm, reports local Economica.net.

Italian construction companies Salini Impregilo and SECOL have been working on this segment. Salini Impregilo has also worked on the third segment of the Sibiu-Orastie highway, which was closed for traffic less than a year after inauguration due to cracks in the road. A portion of this highway segment had to be demolished and rebuilt.

This incident determined the National Highways Company – CNADNR to check the quality of the other highway segments on which the Italians have worked.

CNADNR commissioned local firm Geotesting CI to inspect the Lugoj-Deva highway segment 2 in February this year. The contract for this highway segment, which is 28.6 kilometers long, is worth some EUR 125 million.
