Amnesty International: Roma face systematic discrimination in Romania

23 February 2017

Roma people continue to be subject to discrimination in Romania, according to the report on human rights drafted by Amnesty International.

The document also notes that Bucharest has been sued at the European Court for Human Rights for taking part in the CIA program of extraordinary transfers.

“Roma continue to face systematic discrimination, forced evictions, and other human rights violations,” according to the Amnesty International report.

In the April 2016 report, the UN Special Rapporteur on combating extreme poverty and human rights urged authorities in Romania to admit severe acts of discrimination against Roma and to implement the Strategy for Roma Inclusion 2015-2020. Romanian authorities were also asked to take measures in education, healthcare, and labor market integration, including by introducing safeguards to avoid forced evictions and to improve access to social housing, according to Amnesty International. Similar concerns were expressed by the European Commissioner for Human Rights.

The AI report also notes that there is a judicial procedure against Romania at the European Court for Human Rights for complicity in the U.S. program of secret detention and extraordinary transfers.
