More than 5 people die every day in car accidents in Romania

Over 1,900 people lost their lives in car accidents on Romania’s roads in 2016, according to information presented by Romania’s General Police Inspectorate. This translates into an average of over 5 people dying in such events every day.

As for the casualties in traffic, about 28,000 people were mildly injured and 8,300 people were seriously injured in road accidents, reports local Digi24.

The number of accidents with injuries increased by 12% in 2016 compared to the previous year and the number of people slightly injured in road accidents increased by 15%. Moreover, the number of accidents with property damage increased by 5% compared to 2015.

For six years, the number of deaths on Romania’s roads was on a downward trend. It went down from 3,000 deaths in 2008 to 1,800 in 2014. The trend changed in 2015, when the death toll began to rise again. Nearly 1,900 people died in road accidents in 2015. Excessive speed remains the leading cause of accidents.
