Over 300 young artists from 48 countries sign up for Romania’s George Enescu Competition

06 June 2016

A total of 317 young artists have registered for the 2016 edition of the George Enescu International Competition, the number being almost 40% higher than the one recorded at the 2014 edition.

The artists come from 48 countries, which also represents an increase from the 2014 edition when 38 states were represented in the local competition. Most competitors are from South Korea (71), followed by Japan (33), Romania (20), China (19), and the US, France, and Russia (17 each). The rest of the countries have less than ten competitors registered.

By sections, the candidates are distributed this way: 139 – violin, 83 – cello, and 64 – piano.

The registrations ended on June 1, and the juries are now in charge of drawing up the final list for the 2016 edition of the Enescu Competition. The winners’ awards will go over EUR 100,000, but they could also benefit from an intensive promotion program, including on the stage of the 2017 George Enescu International Music Festival.

The George Enescu International Competition will take place between September 3 and September 25 at the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest. All the stages of the competition will be open to the public. Tickets cost between RON 20 and RON 50 while subscriptions cost RON 300 and RON 400. They can be purchased online here.
