Romania’s National Authority for Tourism (ANT) has withdrawn or cancelled the operating licenses of 1,300 travel agencies, said George Boruna, general director of the ANT Control Direction, reports local Profit.ro.

“We’ve removed the licenses of those who didn’t have insurance policies anymore,” Boruna added.

A travel company can legally operate if it has a valid insurance policy, among other requests. About 1,700 tourism agencies are now still licensed.

The list of companies that couldn’t prove they still have valid insurance policies is available on the website www.turism.gov.ro under the “tourism authorization” section.

Tourists can lose their holiday money if the agency they work with closes down and doesn’t have a valid insurance policy. Two travel companies have recently filed for insolvency, namely Mareea and Genius. The last one announced its customers about its insolvency via a text message.
