Media: Some 10,000 Romanians were studying abroad between 2015 and 2016

17 March 2017

The number of young Romanians choosing to study abroad increased by 6% in the last two years and more than 10,000 Romanian students were studying outside of the country between 2015 and 2016, Digi24 reports, quoting representatives of an educational fair taking place this weekend in Bucharest.

The Romanian International University Fair RIUF takes place in Bucharest this weekend, on March 18 and 19.

The main countries chosen by those opting to get a graduate or postgraduate degree outside of Romania are UK, US, Italy, France, and Germany, according to the same source.

Most Romanians going to study in the UK resort to government loans, which students coming from EU member states can access. Such a loan amounts to GBP 27,000 for the graduate degrees and maximum GBP 10,000 for masters degrees. Students repay the loan only when they have a job and earn a certain yearly revenue.

Similar loans are available in The Netherlands, where study fees stand at around EUR 2,000. Other countries, such as Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Germany or France have low fees in state universities or offer free study programs, according to the same source.
