Update: Over 100 Romanians party at restaurant in Spain and run without paying the bill

02 March 2017

It’s not unusual that a customer goes into a restaurant, orders some food and drinks, consumes them, and leaves without paying the bill. But to have over 100 dinners running from a party without paying the bill must be some sort of a record.

It recently happened to a small restaurant owner in Spain’s Leon province. He had some 120 Romanian dinners celebrating a baptism in his restaurant in the town of Bembibre. Just before serving them desert, the guests fled without paying the bill, according to local leonoticias.com.

The restaurant owner says that over 100 people left his place in a stampede in just a minute. The waiters didn’t even have time to react to this.

The man who organized the party, who apparently was the godfather of the two baptized children, only made a EUR 900 down payment. The restaurant owner still has some EUR 2,000 to recover, but chances are slim that he will ever get his money.

The Police in Leon do not rule out premeditated deception or fraud. They haven’t been able to identify the person who made the reservation because “he either left some personal data wrong or the hotel did not write the information properly,” a Police spokesperson told El Pais.

Update: The waiters at the restaurant said they didn't realize that the group of Romanians wanted to leave because they seemed to be dancing the conga. They exited the restaurant in a row, a waiter told Romanian Digi 24 news station.

The Police have identified a part of them based on Facebook profiles and are now trying to find them. Apparently the group organized some similar hits at restaurants in Spain, but they weren't made public. In one case, they went to the restaurant with their own food, but wanted to leave with the crockery and cutlery. According to the Spanish Police their operating mode involves using fake I.D.s and even fake license plates for their cars, Digi 24 reports.
