Over 1.35 million employees in Romania were working in the state sector in 2015, namely either in the public system, in the state-owned companies, or in the “self-financed” state institutions (such as the Financial Supervisory Authority), reports local Ziarul Financiar.

They represented 30% of the total number of employees in Romania’s economy in 2015, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INS).

In total, the local economy employed 4.61 million people. The private sector, either with Romanian or private capital, employed 3.25 million of them.

The number of employees in the state sector went down compared to 2010 when 1.58 million people were working for the state. Of them, employees in the public system, such as people in healthcare, education, law enforcement, and public administration, constantly remained at around 1.2 million employees.

The lowest number of employees in the private sector was recorded in Romania in 2010, namely 2.79 million. However, the number increased by 16% in 2015 compared to 2010. Private companies managed to create over 460,000 jobs during this period.
